The 10 Best Hard Rock/Metal Songs About Addiction and Recovery

The 10 Best Hard Rock/Metal Songs About Addiction and Recovery

Music helps us through the hardest of times including those times when we fall and try to pick ourselves back up.  Many musicians grapple with drugs, alcohol, and other addiction and recovery.  Some are successful and others have a continual struggle.   Some artists lose their way and die too early.  There are so many brilliant musicians who have had their lives abbreviated.  Some rockers actually recover and sometimes replace their bad addictions for healthier ones such as exercise.  Sharing their struggles and successes help others.

I changed the order of these songs several times as they are meaningful in different ways.  Listen to them in any order or shuffle as your mood dictates.  Here is a list of the ten best hard rock/metal songs about addiction and recovery:

10.   “It’s Been A While” by Staind

This song is for anyone who struggles with drugs and relationships.  The words to the song touch upon the reality for many addiction is about self-loathing and trauma.  The main figure of the song realizes that it has been a while since he felt anything.  Staind was formed in 1994 in Springfield, Massachusetts.  The vocalist, Aaron Lewis, has set out on a country music career since 2011.

9.   “Deal With The Devil” by Pop Evil

“Deal With The Devil” is off of the album Onyx from Pop Evil.  The song lyrics ask,

When you’re high who you flying for? When you ride who you riding for?  When you toast who you drinking for?  When you play, got a deal with the devil.

Pop Evil is a rock band from Grand Rapids, Michigan and is known for their single “Trenches”.  The opening scene is of a woman breathing hard and you know she is craving drugs as she proceeds to shoot up with heroin.  Be  forewarned that the video will be a trigger for users.  I chose not to post it here for those of you who are struggling to stay clean right now.

8.  “My Own Prison” by Creed

Creed is an American rock band from Florida.  The vocalist, Scott Stapp, talks openly about his alcohol and drug addiction.  He is living soberly now.  He battled depression and addiction and it culminated into a forty foot fall off of a balcony.  He has a solo career now and also wrote a book Sinner’s Creed.

7.  “Save Me” by Shinedown

Brent Smith, the singer of Shinedown, has had a tremendous physical transformation after going through recovery.   He traded drugs and alcohol for working out and eating right.  He looks like, and is, a different person.  His honesty about his addiction, recovery, and life makes Shinedown one of the most successful bands in the world.

6.  “Truth Hurts” by Bullet for My Valentine

One more drink, one more pill, Just one more line to make me feel, Like I have something left to give,  Cause without it I’m just giving in.

Bullet For My Valentine almost broke up because of the issues with alcohol and drug abuse.  Many fans including myself are thankful the band corrected themselves and got on a path of control.  Working through their problems, they released their album, Temper Temper of which this track is number two.

5.   “Fine Again” by Seether

Seether is a South African alternative metal band.  The band is probably best known for the single, “Broken” featuring Amy Lee, then girlfriend of Shaun Morgan.  Seether’s frontman, Shaun Morgan, has had addiction to a combination of substances.

4.  “Animal I Have Become” by Three Days Grace

Three Days Grace (3DG) has reorganized with vocalist, Adam Gontier, pursuing a solo career and 3DG enlisting My Darkest Days singer, Matt Walst, also brother of 3DG bassist, Brad Walst.  Adam Gontier has been very open and supportive to all the people who are struggling with addiction.  The entire One-X album is a dedication to those struggling with addiction and recovery.

3.   “Life is Beautiful” by  Sixx A.M.

Sixx A.M. is the hard rock band consisting of Nikki Sixx (also bassist for Mötley Crüe, photographer, and radio host), DJ Ashba (also guitarist for Guns N Roses), and James Michael.   This track is hopeful and helps the addict to realize that life is beautiful and someone will miss them when they are gone.  Every person, regardless of the bad things they have done, will be missed by someone if they die.

2.  “Hate Me” by Blue October

This song is so raw and real and honest.  Blue October’s, Justin Furstenfeld, is an amazing lyricist.  The lyrics to this song really touch on feelings we all have of inadequacy and disappointing those who love us the most.  Watch the video here:

1.  “The Death of Me” by Asking Alexandria

I wanted some of the songs to have a more positive feel.  Many can be depressing and introspective.  “The Death of Me” talks about the resolve of Danny Worsnop, vocalist of Asking Alexandria, and that he is back and better than ever!

That is my list of the best hard rock/metal songs about recovery.  Here are other songs that received honorable mention.

“Mr Self Destruct” by Nine Inch Nails, “No Excuses” by  Alice in Chains, “The Great Divide” by Scott Stapp, “Beyond The Realm’s of  Death” by Judas Priest, and “Suicide Messiah” by Black Label Society

Are there other songs that have helped you on your road to recovery?  Share them with others here.

Nonpoint and Otherwise Concert Review and Photos

Nonpoint and Otherwise Concert Review and Photos

Nonpoint
Otherwise

The show was on a late summer evening in 2013.  The weather was balmy and pleasant.  I saw Nonpoint and Otherwise at the historic Castle Theatre in Bloomington, Illinois.  This venue is very small and has a nice stage with an intimate feel.  Local bands Clippoint and Polarity opened.  The final opener was Primer 55, a solid metal band from Atlanta, Georgia.

Otherwise is a hard rock band from Las Vegas, Nevada.  Their song, “I Don’t Apologize (1000 Pictures)” is a great song about getting cheated on.  They lyrics:

I’d rather be blind than to see your eyes,  I’d rather be deaf than to hear your lies

I’d rather be broke than to sell my soul, I gave you my all but you’ll never know

No I’m not going to  hurt anymore, I’ve already walked through that door

The catchy hook and the timeless subject of infidelity makes it a sure hit.  Watch the video here:

The band had family that had traveled from Chicago in the audience and dedicated fans who knew every single word to every song.  Ryan Patrick, the guitarist came up to one of those fans and acknowledged her immediately.  Then he came right up to me and gave me a hug.  That is what I love about the small venue.  You can really connect with the artist so closely.   Vassilios “V” Metropoulis, the bassist, of Otherwise did a lot of work for the band including sound check, carrying equipment, selling merchandise and posing for pictures.

Nonpoint is a metal band from Fort Lauderdale, Florida with Puerto Rican roots.  They have played huge venues like Download Festival but small venues like The Castle Theatre as well. The vocalist, Elias Soriano, had locs down to his waist and was wearing an old Snoop Dog shirt.  Robb Rivera, the drummer, has his stuffed “Animal” from the Muppets keeping his kit company.

Elias Soriano’s voice is hypnotic and the rhythm makes you want to bang your head all night.   Nonpoint played all their hits including “Bullet With a Name On It”, “Left for You”, “I Said It”, and their cover “In The Air Tonight”.  One of their biggest fans was V Metropoulis from Otherwise.  He got in the middle of the pit and got it moving.  Security started moving up to control him and then they realized he was from Otherwise.  He was fine and I am glad to say there were no injuries in that pit.

Elias Soriano’s wife and sweet daughter with protective ear gear was in the crowd.  She was watching her daddy work. That is so nice that he is able to bring his family to be together on the road.

The photos and video are from the show on Sunday, August 18, 2013 in Bloomington, Illinois at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum.  I was lucky and won a spot to meet the bands from my local radio station, 96.7 I-Rock.  Every band member was very gracious and nice.  The Carnival of Madness performers who tour with the bands and perform carnival acts and fire twirling even expressed the humility of the artists involved with the tour.  The show was very good and all the bands rocked the house.

We As Human began the night and rocked the house.  We As Human is a Christian hard rock band.  The fans loved them.  For every show, the drummer takes a picture of the band with the fans in the background and they post it to their Facebook page.

The next band to perform was In This Moment.  The singer, Maria Brink, receives a lot of attention wherever she goes as she is a beautiful woman.  Maria Brink is a featured vocalist on the Five Finger Death Punch song Anywhere But Here.  ITM’s single Blood has been on the top of the Billboard Rock charts peaking at number nine.

Skillet performed next and really brought the energy to the night.  John Cooper exclaimed that his A.D.D. made him keep doing a machine gun maneuver.  The sweat was pouring off his body and their set was incredible.  Skillet brings a very positive, Christian message as well.

Papa Roach took the stage next and brought the tracks that we all know and love.  Jacoby Shaddix said that they have been making music for twenty years!  That is a testament to their staying power as rock legends.

The final performer was Shinedown. Shinedown‘s Brent Smith has had an incredible transformation physically and he performs better than ever.  Shinedown‘s lyrics speak to their fan’s souls giving them some of the most enthusiastic fans

Asking Alexandria, Motionless in White, Upon a Burning Body, and Crown The Empire Concert Photos and Videos

The photos from this show on Thursday, August 8, 2013 in Bloomington, Illinois at the historic Castle Theatre.  I highly recommend seeing any of these bands, Crown The Empire, Upon a Burning Body, Motionless in White and Asking Alexandria know how to put on a phenomenal show.  Every act had extremely high energy.  Each band member was incredibly nice.  The size of the venue also made this particular concert an ultimate fan experience as it was the smallest venue of the tour.  Fans had opportunity to touch, smell and interact with the bands and band members.  All of the photos of this show are taken from a fan perspective.  If you were at the show, scroll down and you may find yourself.

The night started with Crown The Empire and they were incredible.  The band members were extremely nice.  The band crowded around this minuscule merch table and talked with fans and posed for pictures for hours.   Crown The Empire is going to be the biggest band to come out of this tour.

The next band was Upon a Burning Body.  Their energy and fan interaction was incredible.  Their image is deceiving because they are dressed in suits but then rock out the entire time.  Danny Leal, the singer, started out in three-piece suit.  As their set continued, he kept losing pieces of his suit until he was shirtless.

Motionless in White came to the stage next and they made the entire pit go crazy.  They are a great band live and had a great performance. Motionless in White has the most interesting music videos. They are dark, contemplative, and intelligent.

Finally, the main event was Asking Alexandria and they delivered a fantastic performance. James Cassells is a phenomenal drummer. Danny interacted with the crowd by talking to them and taking time to even hug an excited fan. They put on a stellar show.

The 10 Best Hard Rock Breakup Songs

The 10 Best Hard Rock Breakup Songs

Breaking up is hard on everyone whether you are a seventeen year old girl or a fifty-five year old man.  There are a million songs about splitting up with your significant other.  Sometimes you need a song that cuts right to the issues without being too flowery or sappy about why you called it quits.  The songs on this list are definitely not sappy and reflect pain when you are cheated on or thankfulness when it is just better to move one.

10. “Disconnected” by Trapt

Trapt

Trapt

Trapt was formed in 1997 in Los Gatos, California when members of the band were still in high school.  The band is best known for their hit, “Headstrong”.  The best lyrics to this song: “You don’t really know me, I don’t think you’ve ever even tried We’re on the same routine and still you never have the time Who do you want me to be? And do you want me in your life? I feel so incomplete, you left me too far behind”

Seether

Seether

Amy Lee of Evanescence was the girlfriend, at the time, of Seether vocalist, Shaun Morgan.  The song has a melancholy melody and the lyrics talk about how each of them are not good without each other.  The song is a song about hope to reconcile and how each of them is broken and do not feel right when the other one is gone.

The 10 Best Patriotic Rock Songs

As you stare into the sky this 4th of July, it is a time to reflect and celebrate our freedom. The United States of America is the greatest country in the world. Our freedom does not come lightly. We celebrate our freedom by honoring the soldiers who gave life, limb, blood, sweat and tears to keep this country free. A lot of the records on this list are to show gratitude to our troops. Thank you to the hard rock and heavy metal artists for honoring our soldiers. 3. “Don’t Tread on Me” Metallica

Metallica

Don’t Tread on Me is a phrase on the Gadsen flag which is a historical American flag with a yellow field with a coiled snake ready to strike. The Gadsen flag is a contemporary symbol for the Tea Party or any supporter of the 2nd Amendment and the right to bear arms. Metallica released this song on their self-titled album aka The Black Album in 1991.

The video for this song is a moving tribute and testament of the sacrifice that soldiers make. This track is from 5FDP’s second album War is the Answer. I could listen to Ivan Moody’s exquisite voice over and over.

1. “Star Spangled Banner” Metallica

Metallica is an American heavy metal band from Los Angeles, California. The members are James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo.  Metallica played the national anthem in May 2013 at a San Francisco Giants game. Needless to say, it was excellent. The combination of baseball, Metallica and rock music is why it tops my list.
