Whitford St. Holmes Concert Review
“For the Fun of it”
November 14, 2015
Reggie’s Rock Club, Chicago, Illinois
Good, old-fashioned fun. That, I surmise, is the reason Brad Whitford and Derek St. Holmes, of Aerosmith and Ted Nugent Band fame, respectively, have reunited and re-kindled a side project called Whitford/St. Holmes they had together for an album in the early 80’s.
So the boys, who live near each other down in Nashville, have put the band back together, so to speak, writing and recording a collection of nine songs that make up a new album appropriately entitled, Reunion. The new album (which isn’t available until early 2016, unless you attend one of the band’s shows, where it can be purchased) seems similar to the original, consisting of melodic, guitar driven album oriented rock, or AOR.
The fact that AOR is not a popular genre, commercially, right now is beside the point for the resurrection of this project, as the purpose of it seems to be: Fun. The fun that two longtime friends and musicians have when they get together and write, record and play music for the simple enjoyment of it (and I assume, for Brad, the fun that comes from making and performing music without the constraints of a day job like Aerosmith). And fans of Holmes and Whitford and this type of music are the beneficiaries of this “fun,” because Whitford/St. Holmes have hit the road in the form of a short mini-tour to take their songs, new and old, and rock them out.
The two have put together a band consisting of Troy Luccketta from Tesla on drums, Buck Johnson from Aerosmith’s touring band on keyboards & vocals, and well regarded Nashville session player, Chopper Anderson, on bass guitar. The outfit played on Saturday, November 14th at Reggies in Chicago, which was the group’s 3rd show of this band’s short tour of approximately 10 dates…but you wouldn’t know it by how tight the band was this night and they appear to already be a well oiled rock ‘n’ roll unit. I was surprised then, when I spoke with drummer Luccketta, a hard hitting energetic performer, after the show and he said the tour rehearsals were limited. It definitely didn’t show.
The highlights of the show are the group’s namesakes. Derek St. Holmes’ long locks from the 80’s may be gone, but his vocal tone, power and performing chops, not to mention his guitar playing, are still in full effect and very engaging. It’s also a pleasure to see Brad Whitford’s riffage and soloing front and center, confirming any doubt he is an underrated player.
The band whipped through a number of new tunes (all nine from the new album, which runs about 37 minutes, albeit in a different running order), followed by some from the first album from the 80’s, and then closed with four well known numbers – two from Aerosmith and two from Ted Nugent. Fun indeed!
This short tour wraps up 11/22, so act quickly to catch them. See all the dates on their website: Whitford St. Holmes. But there seems to be talk of more dates once the album is officially released next year.

Shinedown and Breaking Benjamin Concert Review
with Sevendust
Peoria Civic Center, Peoria, Illinois
Shinedown and Breaking Benjamin have teamed up with Sevendust to create a super tour. Each band has a devoted following and fan base. Doors to the venue had notices that stated strobe lights were in use and loud fireworks as well. The signs piqued the curiosity of the crowd as they entered the venue.
Sevendust opened the evening and played one of the shortest sets ever. My companions and I missed most of their set due to traffic backed up for over an hour. Sevendust are a favorite in the area and the fans showed up early to see them. What I did see included Sevendust’s new song “Thank You” off their album Kill The Flaw.
Breaking Benjamin took the stage next with their return to making music and touring. Their number one album Dark Before Dawn is still highly successful. Fans came out to see their classic hits such as “Blow Me Away”, “Breath”, “Polyamorous”, “I Will Not Bow” and “The Diary of Jane”. Their performance was solid but sound issues seem to plague them. There were a few moments when sound was sub-par. Their stage was set with their signature Celtic knot of interlocking B’s flanking each side of the stage with pressurized air being shot from the top of each one. Part of their show contains bringing children on the stage with their parents. It was a dream come true for some of the kids and their parents. Ben Burnley, the main force behind Breaking Benjamin and only original member, spoke about being in the crowd when he was younger and knowing that he wanted to perform some day. Fans embraced their set and loved the mix of new and classic songs.
I was always just a passing fan of Shinedown but I am surrounded by friends who have seen them double digit times. They have listened to their music at their lowest times in their lives to emerge with hope. Shinedown is their music friend. Their latest album Threat To Survival has relatable lyrics that paint a visionary tale with extremely catchy hooks. The album is the most listenable of 2015 and is definitely on the list of the best of 2015. While some fans will miss the hard rock that Shinedown has been known for, new fans will be able to still feel a little of the hard rock with “Cut The Cord”. Brent Smith told the crowd that night that they knew that the album would change some things up. A deliberate move to pop rock while retaining the lyrical genius.
“Thick As Thieves”
“Evidently we can’t work it out
I guess that courage ain’t allowed
Evidently you’re not in the mood
And everything I say just bothers youYou built this fortress
I stumble towards it”
The show was punctuated with pyrotechnics with flame cannons and loud fireworks. The setlist included a lot of new songs and songs that go along with the pop rock feel such as “Bully”, “State of My Head”, “I’ll Follow You”, “45”, and “Simple Man”.
Judas Priest Redeemer of Souls Tour Concert Review
with Mastodon
Peoria Civic Center, Peoria, Illinois
The longevity of Judas Priest has weathered lineup changes and their career has seen superstar status in the 1980s with their album British Steel of which tracks, “Breaking The Law” and “Living After Midnight” are classic songs that receive radio play. A hundred artists have covered “Breaking The Law” and it has been featured in television shows and movies. The band released an album Redeemer of Souls July 8, 2014. Judas Priest has been on tour for support of the album for over a year now and traveled through North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and South America.
Peoria, Illinois was lucky enough to have Judas Priest grace them with their presence. Everyone knows that Judas Priest could play larger venues and not even bother with playing smaller venues. They do so for the fans. The fans will travel far and wide to get so close to these metal legends. While the fans consisted mainly of older gentlemen, there were fans of all ages. Fans who were metalheads, musicians, and their companions all were blown away by the power in Rob Halford’s vocals.
Metal award winning band Mastodon opened the show. Their stage was set with a large backdrop designed by the artist known as Skinner. Skinner’s work is immediately recognizable. He also designed the album cover for Mastodon Once More ‘Round The Sun.
Mastodon took the stage with Brent Hinds and Troy Sanders looking like Wildlings with long hair and beards. Members of Mastodon did star as Wildlings in the HBO original series Game of Thrones. They also have a song “White Walkers” on Game of Thrones Mixtape II .
Mastodon’s setlist this evening contained “Tread Lightly”, “Once More ‘Round The Sun”, “Aqua Dementia” and “Black Tongue”. Their set was more energetic than I’ve seen them in the past perhaps because they had more stage to move around. Everyone tries to describe Mastodon by placing them into a sub-genre of rock like progressive rock or groove metal. They are rockers whose musicianship will impress you because they are just that magnificient.
Judas Priest built the anticipation to their set by having a large curtain cover the stage with their name in large letters and their signature pitchfork. The curtain dropped and they started with “Dragonaut”. Rob Halford came out with a cane that was for style and not necessity. Their stage set included an led screen the entire backdrop and two smaller screens in front of either side of the elevated drum kit. Two lighted pitchforks hung from the air on either side of the backdrop screen. The screens featured album covers, lyrics for some songs, and cameras from the stage of the band and the crowd. Their tracks included several songs to show that Rob Halford’s vocals are still outstanding and Glenn Tipton’s wailing guitar, thumping bass of Ian Hill and the hard-hitting drums of Scott Travis. Not to leave out the youngster, Richie Faulkner on guitar who also brings a lot of energy and skill to the show. They performed “Desert Plains”, “Screaming For Vengeance”, and “The Rage” and their hits as well. Watching the set made me tired. I do not know how the older gentleman in the band continue their touring schedule. Drummer, Scott Travis seemed to have an endless supply of energy.
Rob Halford’s costume changes occurred during every song. His wardrobe consisted of leather, whips, handcuffs, and vests and jackets adorned with gems or studs. Rob also rides out on a motorcycle to the expectation of the fans. He took a moment during the show to thank all the metalheads who came out to support them. I know a lot of fans wanted to make sure they saw the legends in person.
You can still see Judas Priest with Mastodon.
